Campus for children from Ukraine in Majorca

Needs faced by the project

The Russian invasion of Ukraine caused severe material and mental damage. Unfortunately, many effects are irreversible, since many children in Ukraine have lost their loves ones and now need help to get rehabilitation and rest. The stress they experienced and continue  to during these two years of war is immense. The fact that they are unable to sleep due to constant air alarms and they are forced to hide in bathrooms or corridors to protect themselves from broken glass in the event of a missile leads to severe emotional distress.

Thus, minors who will grow up with psychological distress and disorders are difficult to heal. Therefore, we offer a place where they can look up at the sky and not see drones or fighter jets, sleep knowing they won’t have to get up at night and run to a shelter, or be able to enjoy their childhood without the fear of harm.

Why in Mallorca?

Firstly, the people of Mallorca have been incredibly welcoming to Ukrainian refugee families on the island, in addition to support organisations like ours to help meet the basic needs of food and hygiene.

Secondly, the Amar Ukraine Association has a Calvia Hostel with sufficient capacity and the necessary facilities to temporarily host children from Ukraine.

And finally, the government of Ukraine, in cooperation with the Ukrainian consulate in Barcelona, chose our organisation as an ideal place for children who need emotional rest.

Why in dormitories and not host families?

The psychology team of Amar Ukraine is aware of the emotional state of the children and the reality that surrounds them. The fact that they have to return to their homeland makes it advisable that the time they spend in Mallorca is not too long, so they cannot adjust to an unreal situation, and then the emotional toll is worsened.

Based on research, the advisable proposal is to spend 12 days in a hostel, in an environment where there are no language or cultural barriers as there would be in foster families. There is a sense of belonging to that life with a foster family on a temporary basis, that unfortunately, these children will not have when they return.

In the dormitories, they will have a psychologist at their disposal who will work with them on their psychological state so has the rest it deserves, and so they can enjoy their staying without anxiety and enjoy a comfortable bed in an environment of tranquility.
